Those who actually went into Iraq/Jordan got the GWOT-E. From my understanding, the GWOTSM is for in support of anti-terrorism operations, while the GWOT-E is for actively participating. To receive the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, a military service member must have served on active duty during a designated anti-terrorism operation for a minimum 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days. For those who were engaged in combat, killed, or wounded in the line of duty the time requirement is waived.
