You have to learn each rank. Ranks were level restricted, meaning even if you had, say, Rank 5 Bite, your low-level pet can't learn it. It would have to learn Ranks 1-4 first. Though I think if you have a high-level pet, you can just teach it Rank 5. It's been so long, I can't remember if you have HAVE to teach them all the ranks.
